I’m talking about WordPress new content editor – Gutenberg. It’s been in the works for some time now and this year it’s planned to be added to the WordPress 5.0 core. If you running WordPress site and don’t have any idea what I’m talking about this post is for you.

What is Gutenberg?

Gutenberg is a new way to edit content in WordPress. It is named after Johannes Gutenberg, who invented a printing press with movable type more than 500 years ago. His invention started the printing revolution and reduced the cost of printing books and other documents, making them more available for common people. And now WordPress, like Johannes Gutenberg, is looking to change publishing with a drastically new and improved content editor. As now you know why it’s called Gutenberg let’s move on and explore it more deeply.

The main concept of Gutenberg is that everything is a block. That means all your content you add to your posts or pages, like paragraphs, images, quotes, galleries, videos and etc. are blocks and all these blocks are treated individually. They can be moved around and modified with settings that are specific to each block.

The new editor will have default blocks (Common Blocks) built-in, like the quote, link, button, gallery and etc.

Common blocks in the new editor – Gutenberg.

And if you need the specific block for your site that Gutenberg doesn’t have you will use the plugin for it.

Why WordPress needs new editor?

TinyMCE, the current WordPress editor, is too simple. Don’t get me wrong it is a good editor but for today’s world it is outdated. People expect more flexibility and functionality for post/page editing. And they want to create more expressive, complex layouts without coding. To achieve this with TinyMCE you have to use shortcodes or page builder plugins. For first time users, it is the frustrating experience as you not only have to learn WordPress but various others tools in order to get what you want. Gutenberg will solve this problem. Out of the box without any extensions, you will have the power to arrange content how you want. With Gutenberg, editing and publishing posts will be much easier. It will reduce the visual difference between how content is created in the admin dashboard and how it is rendered on your page.

How to try Gutenberg?

Important to note! Gutenberg is still in active development and it is beta software. The best place to try out is the local or staging environment. If you are trying on your live site make sure you have a backup and you can easily revert back if something goes wrong.

To try out the new editor, you can download and install the Gutenberg plugin from official WordPress.org plugin directory in your WordPress dashboard.

Also, there is a live demo site to see how Gutenberg works. You can view it here -> Gutenberg Live Demo.

If you want to know more about this editor please visit the official Gutenberg page on WordPress.org.

Just Good Themes & Ghost – Past, Present And The Future https://justgoodthemes.com/just-good-themes-ghost-past-present-and-the-future/ Mon, 04 Dec 2017 14:17:53 +0000 https://justgoodthemes.com/?p=259 Read more "Just Good Themes & Ghost – Past, Present And The Future"]]> If you have been following our work for some time you probably noticed that WordPress is not the only platform we work with. We also build themes for Ghost. We have been working with Ghost platform from its first release. The first time we heard about it was from John O’Nolan’s blog post. At that time it was just an idea presented with a clear vision and beautiful design mockup and we really liked it. To support his idea John started hugely successful Kickstarter Campaign and raised $300 000. We also pledged few bucks to support it 🙂 . After that Ghost (thank you Hana and the team for awesome work) was released and from this day we are keeping an eye on Ghost development and building themes for it as well.

Why we choose to work with Ghost

If you are wondering why we choose to work with Ghost the reason is quite simple. We love tools that do one job and do it well and we see Ghost as this kind of tool. Also, we choose to work with it because it has completely different technology stack compared to WordPress. Ghost s built with Node, Express and Ember framework and it is useful for us to learn new tools and techniques.

Ghost Theme Releases by Just Good Themes

We released six paid and one free theme during the time we have been working with Ghost. All paid Ghost themes are distributed via ThemeForest and our free theme Scriptor can be downloaded via GitHub. All our themes are up to date and working with the latest Ghost version and we will keep it this way.

This is the complete list of all our Ghost themes on ThemeForest:

Client Work

Ghost platform also brought us quite a few clients. We created sites or customized themes for The Wine Gallery, Fort Brox, Happiful Magazine, Ad Creative and others. All in all, it’s been an awesome experience.

The Future

We are writing this post not only to share with you our experience with Ghost but to announce that soon we will be releasing a brand new Ghost theme and it will be the first theme distributed via our own site. From that day Just Good Themes will become WordPress and Ghost theme shop.

Nothing will change for our WordPress theme customers. But it will be quite a significant change for people who are using our Ghost themes as we will be releasing more Ghost themes and writing content and adding new services related to Ghost platform as well.

Hope you are excited as we are! If yes, join our newsletter to know when the new theme release hits the site!

How To Change User Profile Image (Avatar) In WordPress https://justgoodthemes.com/how-to-change-user-profile-image-avatar-in-wordpress/ Thu, 16 Mar 2017 14:56:11 +0000 https://justgoodthemes.com/?p=179 Read more "How To Change User Profile Image (Avatar) In WordPress"]]> WordPress has an interesting way of handling user profile images – avatars. Let’s see in more details how it works and how to improve it.

In WordPress, profile images are powered by Gravatar, a free service run and supported by Automattic. If you don’t know what Gravatar is, in short, it’s a service that allows you to create a profile and associate avatar images to their email addresses. Once you create a profile on the Gravatar website, your Gravatar image will automatically follow you whenever you participate in any WordPress site. For example, if you leave a comment with an email on a WordPress site, it pulls your avatar image from Gravatar servers and displays it next to your comment. It’s a good service and it helps you be more organized and consistent with your avatars and have unified online identity.

And what if you, your site users or clients don’t want to use Gravatar? Can you simply upload your avatar via WordPress dashboard? The answer is no. WordPress has no alternatives built in.

But as usually with WordPress, if you need functionality that isn’t there, you can use a plugin. To improve avatar experience I would recommend the WP User Avatars plugin created by John James Jacoby (core contributor at WordPress.org).

WP User Avatars is simple and easy to use. You simply install and activated it and your profile has new options for uploading your avatar image from your computer or media library. Awesome!

There is a track ticket open in WordPress core contribution forum about adding the functionality for custom avatars. Maybe in the future releases of WordPress you don’t have to use the plugin for this anymore.

Giving Back To WordPress – The Important Part Of Open Source https://justgoodthemes.com/giving-back-to-wordpress-the-important-part-of-open-source/ Tue, 14 Feb 2017 13:10:34 +0000 https://justgoodthemes.com/?p=156 Read more "Giving Back To WordPress – The Important Part Of Open Source"]]> Currently, WordPress is powering 27.5% of all websites on the internet. It is one of the biggest open source projects in the world.

w3techs statistic
w3techs.com

This didn’t happen overnight, WordPress became popular for few reasons — it’s flexible, open source, free and it has a big community behind it. People who contributed many hours of voluntary work to improve WordPress and make it more awesome, in my opinion, is the main reason why WordPress became so popular. And if you are using WordPress today and it makes your life easier or it helps you to find new customers and grow your business, consider giving something back. You can do it even if you don’t know how to code.

At Word Camp Europe 2014, Matt Mullenweg suggested the idea that companies should contribute 5% of their effort back to the WordPress project:

“I think a good rule of thumb that will scale with the community as it continues to grow is that organizations that want to grow the WordPress pie (and not just their piece of it) should dedicate 5% of their people to working on something to do with core — be it development, documentation, security, support forums, theme reviews, training, testing, translation or whatever it might be that helps move WordPress mission forward.”

Matt Mullenweg – Five for the Future

This is a great idea. Also, it highlights the main areas which you can contribute to. These areas are:

The links I provided above will take you to the pages on WordPress.org where you can find all information you need about how you can contribute to WordPress project in that particular area. If you have any associated skills from the list above, your work can be very useful for a lot of people, be it building and releasing free theme or helping to translate WordPress in your native language or providing support on forums.

How we contributing to WordPress

At Just Good Themes we contribute by providing free support on WordPress.org forums and also we have a free WordPress themes, Stork in the repository (with 2000+ active installs) and Azalea on our own website. This is our chosen way to give back to WordPress. In the near future, we will be releasing more free themes and maybe try other areas of contribution.

I believe in the idea that if you benefit from an open source project, be it WordPress, Ghost, Drupal or any other, you should give something back. It can be anything — support, free code or even donating money to the project or community event. By giving something back you are saying thank you to all people who helped to build it.
